Overview

FARA is an AI-driven optical and auditory system designed to make fire operations safer and more efficient. Seamlessly integrated into the firefighter's uniform, FARA combines goggles with AR-based Critical Information Overlay (CIO) and an earpiece with biometric tracking.

The Problem

Fire Rescues are inherently difficult and dangerous - characterized by hindered visibility, disjointed communication, and limited information upon arriving on the scene.

Research & Insights

I conducted interviews with firefighters to understand the challenges they face during high-stress missions and their technology needs. We prototyped gear on SCAD students to refine functionality and design.

Questions Explored

what are their biggest struggles?
how long do firefighters have to get ready?
how can we make it withstand high temperatures?
how do Firefighters communicate with each other?
how can we make it easy to put on quickly?
will our device get in the way?
how can we make it withstand high temperatures?
how is the device powered or charged?
is it part of the helmet?
how can we make this device feel like second nature?
how do can they use it with bulky gloves?
how can we make it easy to put on quickly?
how does it charge?
what does our device need to offer?
what does the future of firefighting look like?
what happens on the "outside" of a fire rescue?
what do Firefighters do before and after a rescue operation?
what measures are being taken to ensure the safety of emergency personnel?
how do Firefighters prepare for a rescue after being called?
how do we ensure the device doesn't break or fall off?
what causes communication gaps during fire rescues?

Pain Points Identified

unintentional mental health check-ups
unknown location of firefighters inside a structure
underprepared for mental consequences
limited visibility and hearing while on a run
inadequate protection from thermal and mental stressors
ignorance of building framework before arriving on the scene
faulty and outdated equipment
disorientation and lack of coordination in high-stress unfamiliar environments
insurmountable exposure to hazardous materials and toxins
unknown structural integrity of buildings they are required to enter into
managing large fires or fires with an unknown cause or source
communication barriers with non-native speakers
manual radio system, poor audio quality
difficulty in managing situational awareness
bulky uniforms hinder mobility
lack of reflection following a fire rescue or operation
inconsistent and fragmented communication
time pressure constraints (getting ready and rescues)
insufficient training for complex scenarios
difficulty coordinating with other emergency response teams
limited knowledge of oxygen capacity whilst in a fire operation

The Solution

CLARITY IN CHAOS

Introducing FARA, the Firefighter Augmented Rescue Assistant—an AI-driven, optical and auditory accessory designed to revolutionize rescue operations. FARA enhances vision, streamlines communication, and ensures real-time situational awareness before, during, and after missions.

The Gear

FARA integrates seamlessly into firefighter equipment through two essential components: an advanced visor system and an intelligent earpiece. Together, they create a comprehensive augmented reality and communication platform.

Visor

3D Modeling Process

Working with industrial designers, we developed detailed 3D models to validate ergonomics, material choices, and integration with existing firefighter equipment.

Reflection

This project taught us the importance of designing for extreme conditions and life-or-death scenarios. Working directly with firefighters showed us that technology in emergency services must be intuitive, reliable, and unobtrusive—there's no room for error when lives are at stake.

This case study focused on FARA's AR visualization and communication capabilities. A production-ready version would integrate seamlessly with existing gas mask and breathing apparatus systems used by fire departments.

By combining AR technology with real-time biometric monitoring and communication systems, FARA transforms how firefighters navigate chaos—turning uncertainty into clarity when every second counts.
